The Race/Ethnicity Dilemma
As the daughter of immigrants from diverse backgrounds, I've grappled with the question of my race and ethnicity. Growing up in Miami immersed me in a mosaic of South American, Central American, and Caribbean cultures. Raised by my Colombian-born mother, I initially believed I was partially Colombian. Despite being born in Venezuela, my family's transient nature led us away within 8 months, later revealing we lacked any true roots there. This realization dawned on me much later in life, prompting a deep contemplation of the intricate layers of race and heritage within my own identity. I recognized the absence of a substantial connection to my birth country; ours was a nomadic existence. I have yet to revisit the countries whose cultures I grew up believing were my blood.
